Thomas S. Fitzpatrick Represents Boston at Annual Belfast International Homecoming Conference

Davis Malm shareholder, Thomas S. Fitzpatrick, was part of a delegation representing the City of Boston in its annual visit to the Belfast International Homecoming conference, October 12-14 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The trip supported the 2014 Boston/Belfast Sister City Agreement, which aims to foster educational exchanges, promote cultural understanding, and stimulate economic development. The visit included a legal symposium at which Mr. Fitzpatrick spoke on the topic of “stop and frisk” police encounters with citizens and the Supreme Judicial Court’s recent decision in Commonwealth v. Warren, as part of a greater discussion on human rights.

Mr. Fitzpatrick is a shareholder and director of the Boston law firm of Davis, Malm & D’Agostine, P.C., where he previously served as its Managing Partner and President for six years. He is a trial lawyer with a practice focused primarily on business, corporate, and commercial litigation. Mr. Fitzpatrick has considerable experience in all manners of complex business disputes and has successfully represented individuals and public, private, and closely held corporations in many multimillion-dollar disputes, including matters that established important principles of law, particularly in the area of corporate fiduciary duties.

Mr. Fitzpatrick serves as outside counsel to the City of Boston and has been a member of the City’s delegations traveling to Belfast as part of the Sister City Agreement, which the two cities entered into in 2014 for the purpose of fostering educational exchanges, promoting cultural understanding, and stimulating economic development.

Boston’s Sister City programs operate as non-profit, independent organizations, and are heavily dependent on voluntary support and contributions. During the 1950s, citizens and government officials recognized the importance of developing closer international relations, and the search for a Sister City began. The success of this program prompted the development of other goodwill sister relations. To date, Boston has established ten Sister City relationships: Kyoto, Japan; Strasbourg, France; Barcelona, Spain; Hangzhou, China; Padua, Italy; Melbourne, Australia; Taipei, Taiwan; Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana; Belfast, Northern Ireland; and Praia, Cape Verde.

Belfast is Boston’s 9th international Sister City relationship and the first of Mayor Martin J. Walsh’s administration. At a ceremony sponsored by the Irish American Partnership, Mayor Walsh and Belfast’s Lord Mayor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir signed the agreement that will continue to build stronger economic development, trade and investment, tourism, youth, cultural, and educational linkages between the two cities.
