On September 27, Davis Malm shareholder William F. Griffin, Jr. was a featured speaker at the Boston Bar Association’s (BBA) program, “Deed Stamps: When Required, When Exempt and When Nonpayment is Challenged by the Department of Revenue.” Mr. Griffin, along with two other panelists, discussed deed stamps, and addressed when they are required, when a transaction is exempt, how the DOR enforces the obligation to pay deed stamps, and certain nuances for conveyancing practices.

Mr. Griffin practices in the Business Law, Real Estate and Environmental areas. He primarily represents privately owned and publicly held businesses in a variety of business and real estate transactions. He has also acted as bond counsel in many tax-exempt bond financings. Mr. Griffin has extensive experience with sophisticated business, financial, and real estate transactions; and has briefed and argued numerous appellate cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the Massachusetts Appeals Court and the Maine Supreme Court. He has conducted or been a panelist at various Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) seminars, and has authored a variety of publications on topics including tax-exempt bonds, corporate organization, and negotiation and tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions. Recently, Mr. Griffin authored a lawyer’s handbook, “A Practical Guide to Massachusetts Closely Held Business Organizations,” published by MCLE.
