On June 20, shareholders William F. Griffin, Jr. and Richard J. Hindlian presented the program, “Foreign Investments in U.S. Real Estate – Tax Law, Entity Selection and Transaction Structures,” at the Massachusetts Society of CPAs (MSCPA) Real Estate Conference. The program provided an overview of basic tax rules applicable to foreign investors, and compared how those rules apply to different ownership entities. It also discussed how real estate transactions may be structured to avoid tax traps and minimize income, estate and gift taxes.

Mr. Griffin practices in the Banking and Credit, Business Law, and Real Estate and Environmental areas at Davis Malm. He primarily represents privately owned and publicly held businesses in a variety of business and real estate transactions, and has also acted as bond counsel in many tax-exempt bond financings. Mr. Griffin has extensive experience with sophisticated business, financial, and real estate transactions, and has briefed and argued numerous appellate cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the Massachusetts Appeals Court and the Maine Supreme Court.

Mr. Hindlian practices in the Tax and Business Law areas at Davis Malm, focusing primarily on tax controversies, international and domestic tax planning and employee benefit plans. He represents publicly held and private corporations, banks, individuals, nonprofit organizations, and other entities in matters involving mergers and acquisitions, public and private offerings of debt and equity securities, venture capital financings, leveraged buyouts, ESOPs and other qualified plans, leasing transactions, tax litigation, estate tax planning, and foreign investments made in the United States and overseas.
