On March 23, Davis Malm shareholder Robert J. Munnelly, Jr. presented at the Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) program, "Protecting Data 2016." Mr. Munnelly's presentation, "Best Practices for WISPs and Other Security Policies," covered aspects of WISPs (Written Information Security Programs), including why they are important as well as how and when to review them.

Mr. Munnelly practices in the Regulatory area. His data security and information privacy practice focuses on advising and working with companies to develop written plans, improve security-related polices, support compliance training, and respond to potential security breaches. He also has extensive experience with legal, regulatory, and local taxation issues faced by energy, cable television, and telecommunications companies in New England and nationally. Mr. Munnelly’s practice in these areas includes representing companies in all six New England states in obtaining utility commission and local licenses, ensuring ongoing compliance with applicable state, local, and federal laws, advocating for changes in existing regulatory requirements and market design, obtaining approvals or disclosing corporate change transactions and transfers, and supporting permitting and development of renewable and conventional energy projects and related contracts, and installation of communications facilities. He also has substantial experience working with companies in other regulated industries and in appellate practice in state and federal courts.

The MCLE Protecting Data 2016 program seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of data security developments affecting Massachusetts businesses and institutions in 2016. It also focused particular attention on the key legal and operational measures that should be considered for inclusion in any effective information security program. This program also provided a timely update on recent enforcement trends and the evolving roles of the Consumer Protection Division of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office as reviewers of business practices and protectors of consumer rights relative to sensitive data. Co-presenting with Munnelly were Sara Cable from the Consumer Protection Division of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office in Boston, MA, and Michael Hammond from accounting firm of O’Connor & Drew, P.C. in Braintree, MA.
