Davis Malm attorney David Rapaport is prominently featured in the recently released book A Million Reasons: Why I Fought for the Rights of the Disabled, by Alan Labonte, which tells the story of a multi-million dollar victory against a Boston law firm who discriminated against Mr. Labonte. Mr. Rapaport served as Mr. Labonte's legal counsel throughout the five-years of litigation that set a new legal precedent protecting the rights of Americans with disabilities.

After being hired as Executive Director of Hutchins & Wheeler, Alan worked diligently to bring the firm out of its deepening financial crisis. He was given a salary increase at the end of his first year and a positive performance review. But, in the months following his informing the partners that he had contracted multiple sclerosis, he was dismissed. At first, Alan and his lawyer, David Rapaport, sought only a modest financial settlement. Hutchins & Wheeler’s stubborn position forced a long-running legal battle under the Massachusetts statute prohibiting handicap discrimination. By refusing Hutchins & Wheeler’s last minute settlement offer of $3 million, Alan and David insured a decision by the Supreme Judicial Court. Its landmark decision set a new legal precedent protecting the rights of employees with disabilities. It also permitted Alan the right to tell his story. A Million Reasons is both a true legal drama, and just as importantly, a highly personal spiritual journey taken by Alan Labonte to reach the final verdict.

The book was reviewed in Massachusetts Lawyer's Weekly and The Boston Globe. The case was also profiled in InsideMS, a lifestyle magazine for people with MS, their families, and healthcare professionals.
